Measurement and research
Measurement of end of life care provision (including the structure, process and outcomes of care) is a key lever for change and is essential so progress can be monitored.
In most cases, organisations measure their structures and processes through self-assessment against the Department of Health’s End of Life Care Strategy Quality Markers and Measures for End of Life Care
Information on place of death is available from the Office for National Statistics.
Other outcomes of end of life care are to be monitored through
- surveys of bereaved relatives
- national audits
- regular reviews of complaints
Working with charities and with other statutory funders, the Department of Health is enhancing research into end of life care.
