Education, training and continuing professional development
Ensuring health and social care staff at all levels have the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes related to care for the dying is critical to improving end of life care.
This means that end of life care needs to be integral to training curricula at all levels and for all staff groups.
Core competences are being developed for three groups of staff:
- those who spend the whole of their time caring for people at the end of life
- those who frequently deal with end of life care as part of their role
- those who infrequently care for people at the end of life
SHAs will wish to consider how training can best be commissioned and provided to ensure that relevant staff have the necessary competences.
