Why do research?

Research is important because it generates new knowledge and evidence which can help to develop, evaluate or improve many areas including

  • existing policy and practice
  • symptom management
  • service organisation
  • understanding of needs in different groups

Use of research knowledge is one factor which demonstrates professional expertise. Keeping up to date with research helps to ensure that practice and policy are evidence based.

Aims of research in end of life care

Research in end of life care can be understood as having three main aims:

1. to add to and refine the body of evidence which can contribute to new service models or interventions, for example clinical drug regimens, psychosocial therapies or information technology

2. to provide academically rigorous and balanced analyses of problems in end of life care, for example issues surrounding end of life decision making

3. to share evidence so it can be used effectively by all those affected by end of life care needs, whether policy makers, practitioners or patients.
