Route map places nurses at centre of end of life care
Nurses can use their pivotal role in end of life care to improve both the commissioning and delivery of services, according to a practical blueprint published today.
The document outlines the actions nurses need to take at each stage of the six step end of life care pathway. These range from early discussions with the individual and family about end of life care through to advance care planning and assessment, co-ordination of care, care during the final days of life and care after death.
However, it also exhorts nurses at all levels to use their knowledge and the status gained from being seen as the ‘key’ professional by many dying people and their relatives to contribute to better commissioning of end of life care services.
The Royal College of Nursing has endorsed the document.
