New guide could help domiciliary care agencies and staff improve end of life care

Domiciliary care staff can play a vital role in supporting people nearing the end of life, according to a practical guide published today.
The Route to Success in end of life care – achieving quality in domiciliary care, follows the six step end of life care pathway through from sensitive initial discussions to care after death. It includes separate lists of points for both provider organisations and their care staff to consider for each step – as well as ‘top tips’ and relevant national Quality Markers.

The latest in a series of such practical guides for different care settings published by the National End of Life Care Programme (NEoLCP), the document provides an overview of the principles that should underpin the delivery of end of life care. A similar document for those working with people with learning disabilities is also published today.
