Dementia is a major and growing issue. An estimated 820,000 people have dementia in the UK and the figure is set to double in the next 40 years. Many of these people will also have some degree of sensory loss.

Kidney units have been urged to implement systems for identifying and recording the wishes of patients nearing the end of life. The call is one of a series of recommendations in a report published today (14 March) by NHS Kidney Care, the quality improvement organisation.
