Millions of British people in their late 40s and 50s are facing a miserable retirement living in poor health for longer, residing in unsuitable housing and dying without adequate care and support, according to a new report out today by the National Council for Palliative Care (NCPC) and the National Care Forum (NCF).

Older people feel that their health problems pose a challenge to their sense of independence, dignity and identity and sometimes the health care they are given makes things worse. According to research funded by UK Research Council’s New Dynamics of Ageing programme (NDA), healthcare providers must avoid taking a ‘blanket view’ of how to help older people cope with the ageing process.

A new DVD aims to help health and social services staff in Scotland understand more about dementia, and think differently about the people with dementia that they might work with. The DVD includes some simple steps that can make a huge difference in improving the experience of people with dementia and their families, friends and carers in health and social services.
