Berkshire East Community Health Services

This pilot site identified the communication skills training requirements and competency levels of qualified and unqualified health and social care staff providing end of life care in the area.

A selection of staff were also given the opportunity to participate in Sage and ThymeTM workshops as part of the project.

Dorset

Dorset Cancer Network set out to review the level of provision of communication skills training available across Dorset to support frontline staff dealing with a client group planning for or approaching their end of life or supporting those who had recently been bereaved.

East of England Cancer Networks

Anglia Cancer Network

Anglia Cancer Network sent out Training Needs Analysis questionnaires to 625 residential care homes, 165 nursing homes, 308 care agencies and 138 nursing agencies as well as to individual directorates in acute trusts, community services and heads of care in hospices.

Essex Cancer Network

The Essex Training Needs Analysis (TNA) was undertaken over a two and a half month period.

Tasks included

  • revising a national TNA template
  • generating a database
  • interviews
  • analysis.

Mount Vernon Cancer Network

Mount Vernon Cancer Network undertook a local Training Needs Analysis (TNA) to identify the number, range and level of communications skills courses required in each locality.

The TNA process facilitated

  • the identification of training requirements
  • the planning of associated training activities
  • the development of a Training Resource Plan.

They also produced an Evaluation of the Advanced and Essential Communication skills training programme.

Lancashire & South Cumbria

Lancashire and South Cumbria Cancer Services Network identified the communication skills training requirements and competency levels of qualified and unqualified health and social care staff providing end of life care.

As part of the project, these staff were also given the opportunity to participate in Sage and ThymeTM workshops.

Leeds

The objectives of the training needs analysis (TNA) in Leeds were to

  • test and evaluate a whole systems approach to TNA across the employers, employees and training providers in the area
  • assess the value of the information gained from the TNA
  • use the resulting report to establish a way forward.

Leicestershire & Rutland – LOROS

LOROS

  • undertook a communication skills training needs analysis of health and social care staff working across the organisation in Leicestershire & Rutland
  • mapped current provision of basic, intermediate and advanced communication skills training for their health and social care staff
  • identified gaps in provision of communication skills training in alignment with recognised standards and competences in health and social care
  • evaluated the impact of two communication skills programmes
  • identified ways in which training may be provided to other staff groups beyond the remit of current provision.
  • identified ways in which flexibility and accessibility can be optimised.

Greater Manchester and Cheshire Cancer Network (GMCCN)

GMCCN aimed to establish the communication skills training needs of a sample of End of Life Care workforce across the Network.

Plymouth

St Luke’s Hospice in Plymouth aimed to

  • assess the end of life care communication skills training needs of health and social care staff who may interact with patients during the last 12 months of their life.
  • engage local workforce development leads, managers and education and training providers to develop partnership introductory, intermediate and advanced level training programmes, in line with national end of life care Core Competences, relevant to local need.

Teeside University

Teeside aimed to identify the current and future communication education and training requirements of health and social care staff at basic, intermediate and advanced levels.

The needs analysis also identified preferred options of learning for each staff group.
