The UWE (University of the West of England) End of Life Care Strategy Group: an education network to respond in partnership to the strategy
Key points
- The University of the West of England has formed an End of Life Care Strategy Group to help share good practice and respond to educational, development and research needs
- Membership and participation have both grown since the group was set up in 2008.
The University of the West of England (UWE) has formed an end of life care forum to help share good practice as well as responding to the educational, development and research needs of organisations and practitioners.
The UWE End of Life Care Strategy Group consists of individuals involved in end of life care education from a wide range of organisations in the west of England. It is hosted and chaired by UWE and was set up in 2008 with a group of local stakeholders.
The group has been involved in review and consultation on the new 2010 pre-registration nursing curriculum at UWE, the review of formal CPD education and its franchise to local hospice education departments and the support of service improvement, research and publication activities with local partners.
Much time is spent by UWE’s End of Life Care Lead in external networking and identifying key individuals within local organisations and trusts who would find the network useful. Membership and participation have both grown in the last two years and this has led to more projects being developed.
The group is now planning how best to communicate and collaborate more widely both with local stakeholders who are not represented, such as nursing homes, and other specialist services such as ITU that would offer the group a wider perspective. There is also a need to communicate with colleagues engaged in similar work nationally. One option being considered is the development of a UWE hosted ‘hub’ webpage that would showcase the group’s work, provision and outcomes.
