Palliative Care Turnaround Project in East Elmbridge and Mid Surrey
Key points
- The East Elmbridge and Mid Surrey Care Turnaround Project aims to ensure all practices and nursing homes adopt the GSF
- The proportion of cancer patients dying at home rose from 14% in 2004 to 20% in 2006 – after the GSF was introduced in some practices
- The cost of the project is around £38,000 a year but savings are expected to be nearly three times that amount
An ambitious palliative care project in East Elmbridge and Mid Surrey is seeking to ensure all practices and nursing homes in the PCT adopt the GSF with the aim of cutting the number of cancer patients dying in hospital.
The early signs are that it is having an impact with the proportion of cancer patients dying at home rising from 14% in 2004 to 20% in 2006 when GSF was operating in some practices.
The aim is to increase the rate above the national average of 25% and to have all practices using the GSF.
The Palliative Care Turnaround Project is led by a GP with a special interest and facilitator in palliative care supported by a multidisciplinary implementation group.
The cost of the project – which is being met by the PCT– is £38,220 a year but the cost savings are expected to be £108,864 a year.
It has, however, faced some problems in trying to support people at home given there is no 24-hour district nursing service and there has been no increase in district nursing support.
