Training out of hours visiting doctors at St Luke’s Hospice in Harrow
Key points
- Out of hours doctors visiting dying patients at home in West London now receive training after concerns about the quality of care patients were experiencing.
St Luke’s Hospice in Harrow has introduced training for all doctors in West London visiting dying patients out of hours in their home.
The training, designed to improve doctors’ confidence and skills, follows concerns about the poor quality of some out of hours care of dying patients.
St Luke’s now offers twice-yearly training events, which are mandatory for all new doctors and voluntary for others, at the Harmoni GP Co-op.
The interactive training covers:
Using complaints to illustrate areas where end of life care could be improved
Training on care of the dying patient in the community guidelines
Training on how to access drugs, nursing assistance, telephone advice and ‘hold’ a dying patient in the community out of hours.
The organisers are now considering extending the programme – which is largely funded by the GP Co-op – to include a resource evening where visiting doctors can receive peer support and education about end of life care.
