Palliative care nursing home respite beds in Bradford & Airedale Teaching PCT

Key points

  • Bradford Teaching PCT commissioned two palliative care respite beds in a local nursing home to fill a gap in service provision
  • The aim is to provide palliative care respite for patients with stable symptoms.

Bradford City Teaching PCT (now part of Bradford & Airedale Teaching PCT) has commissioned two palliative care respite beds in a nursing home to fill a gap in service provision because local hospices do not provide respite care.

Macmillan GP facilitators became aware of the problem when primary care teams asked for respite care for palliative care patients during their practice visits.

The facilitators approached the PCT who agreed to commission two respite beds in a local nursing home, helped by funding from Macmillan Cancer Support.

The aim is to provide respite care for palliative care patients with stable symptoms. Nursing home staff provide the care, with advice and support from the Bradford Palliative Care Team.

The Bradford Macmillan GP Facilitation Team manages admissions to the beds and undertake audits.

Although the evaluation is ongoing, initial informal feedback from service users and professionals has been very positive.
