Palliative Initiative in Neurological Care (PINC) in Sue Ryder Care Neurological Care Centres
Key points
- Sue Ryder has set up a palliative care programme to improve end of life care for its neurological patients
- Initial findings from the pilots indicate care and documentation have improved.
The Sue Ryder Care Neurological Care Centres have set up a programme to improve end of life care for residents by using the recognised end of life care tools.
The Palliative Initiative in Neurological Care (PINC) aims to help more residents die in the care setting of their choice.
It also seeks to reduce the number being moved inappropriately to hospital in the last weeks of their life.
Six pilots took place between September 2006 and February 2007, and early indications are that the adapted tools have enhanced end of life care as well as improving documentation-keeping and communication with community services.
Use of the tools also provides invaluable data to analyse how the service operates and to develop and improve care at the end of life.
In response to these findings the care centres have begun to deliver a generalist palliative care education programme, with a particular focus on neurological conditions and non-malignant symptom control.
At the end of the programme, dependent on the achieved outcomes and subject to funding, Sue Ryder Care may roll out the tools to other health care services within the organisation.
