Palliative care education and information website in Manchester
Key points
- A new palliative care website has been set up in Manchester to provide 24-hour information and educational resources
- The site includes tutorials, local contact details, referral forms and a bulletin board.
Manchester PCT and the city’s palliative care forum have set up a palliative care website offering information and educational resources to local community and hospital staff 24 hours a day.
The site is aimed at all nurses, GPs, and allied health professionals who come into contact with and manage the care of patients with palliative care needs.
The site, which was funded by the Greater Manchester & Cheshire Cancer Network, aims not to duplicate information currently available but direct health professionals towards other relevant links.
The site also includes:
Information for health professionals about, for instance, travelling abroad and bereavementTutorialsA wide range of symptom management issuesLocal contact detailsReferral formsBulletin board
The project has presented a number of challenges, including learning about IT, co-ordinating information and engaging a diverse range of health professionals and project managing on a larger scale than initially anticipated.
The team has now bought a user-friendly computer-based package to enable all team members to update the website when needed.
There will also be an annual full-scale review of the content as well as ongoing marketing of the site.
Organisers are also considering moving the site from intranet to internet to enable nursing homes to gain access.
