A Leeds-based website offers advice and information on all aspects of palliative and end of life care.

The site is designed to help those who need to make choices in the various stages of illness about preferred place of care and types of care. It includes information for patients, carers, health and social care providers and organisations with links to other local, national and educational sites.

The website was created as part of the Leeds Marie Curie Delivering Choice Programme (MCDC) in partnership with NHS Leeds, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, Leeds City Council, Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust, St Gemma’s Hospice and Sue Ryder Care, Wheatfields Hospice and in consultation with patients and carers.

The design and content have been developed in two phases by a steering group with representatives from all partner organisations and patients and carers.

The first phase, which was launched in October 2008, provides general information and advice for patients, carers and staff. It includes sections on the following:

What is palliative care?

Palliative care services in your locality and out of hours services

Frequently asked questions

Patient and carer pages containing, help, advice, information and patients’ and carers’ experience

Information on Leeds MCDC Programme

Information on end of life initiatives

The following areas of phase two of the website are now live:

A monthly palliative care education and training directory

Online booking and pre- and post-course evaluations for palliative care courses

Promotion of palliative care local and national events

Areas which are still under development include:

Online learning opportunities

Teaching resources

Access to policies, documents and guidelines

NHS Leeds has made a commitment to provide the annual funding, governance and administrative resource needed to update and monitor the site on a monthly basis. The business case for a clinically managed network identifies the need for ongoing funding and maintenance of the website. An evaluation of the website will take place in March 2009.
