End of Life Care Advisory Group in Barts and the London Trust
Key points
- Barts and the London NHS Trust has set up an advisory group to raise the profile of end of life care in the trust
- The trust has a full-time LCP facilitator and 76% of its wards use the LCP
- The advisory group aims to make end of life care a priority at board level and to be ready to respond to forthcoming national policy recommendations.
An end of life care advisory group has been set up at Barts and the London Trust to raise the profile of end of life care within the trust and ensure dying patients receive high quality care.
The trust already has a full-time LCP facilitator and more than three quarters of all wards now use the LCP.
The trust is also taking part in the national ITU project developed by the LCP Central Team in Liverpool.
The advisory group, which was set up in January 2008, provides leadership and governance for end of life care and ensures it is seen as a priority at board level.
The group will also advise and respond to the forthcoming Department of Health End of Life Care Strategy and Health Care for London Framework.
A report on the impact of the LCP and an audit on quality have already been presented to the board.
In addition all senior clinical staff receive a monthly progress report on the extent of LCP use across the trust.
LCP implementation and comparison with patient deaths not on the LCP have also been incorporated into the measures of trust performance.
Meanwhile end of life care and the LCP are set to become part of the mandatory trust induction and update days.
The group is also working to ensure the long-term future of the LCP facilitator role.
