Developing a core competency framework for end of life care in North Bristol NHS Trust

Key points

  • North Bristol NHS Trust has introduced a core competency framework for end of life care
  • The framework, introduced in September 2005, will be used by all newly qualified band 5 nurses as well as inexperienced nurses new to their role.

North Bristol Trust’s Integrated Care Pathway for End of Life Care Team has in partnership with the Workforce Development Team developed a core competency framework for end of life care.

The framework, which was introduced in September 2005, is used for band five newly qualified nurses or inexperienced nurses new to their role who have registered on a professional development programme.

The competencies enable the individual practitioner to identify areas for personal development and discuss with their ward-based mentor how they can access learning opportunities to develop their skills.

The framework will be used in conjunction with other educational initiatives and the integrated care pathway for the last days of life, which has now been introduced in 31 ward areas across the trust.

It is planned to review complaints received by the trust to see whether improving end of life care has led to a reduction.
